July 15, 2009

A short drama featuring a young photographer losing his sight is in production by a few talented filmmakers in Washington, DC.  From the recently launched web site:

The Blind Photographer is a 2009 thirty minute short film by multi-award-winning filmmakers Isaiah Headen and Dustin Harrison-Atlas. It is the story of James Davis, a teenage photography prodigy who loses his vision in an accident and struggles to regain his confidence in the face of his new reality. All seems lost after the art school of his dreams removes him from the program, but he’s given a second chance to resubmit his portfolio, as a blind photographer. In the midst of unstable relationships with his demanding father, cold stepmother and insecure girlfriend, he must figure out a way to shoot photographs through the eyes of others. It is a film that tests the human spirit, redefines family and warms the soul.

I met with the producer, Isaiah Headen, a few weeks ago when he drove down to Chapel Hill to learn a bit more about the realities of being a visually-impaired photographer. While feeding Isaiah a much needed sandwich, we discusses how I make photographs, this community of blind photographers and the broad continuum of visual impairments and the myriad ways that we have used to adapt. The filmmakers also want to broaden understanding of these issue. “Today, one out of five Americans have a disability and 9.1 million of those have a sensory disability (vision or hearing loss). The Blind Photographer serves to encourage those with disabilities to be involved in the artistic community while changing the general perception of what disabled individuals can accomplish through art.

As the film progresses, you can expect updates, interviews and a review here on BP. For now, here is the trailer:
