Cherry Tomato in soft light on a table with green background

First Crop

This was literally the first ripe cherry tomato from a plant I grew in my front room (I don’t have a greenhouse so had to do it indoors). I love the smell of these – reminds me of walking into my uncle’s greenhouse when I was a little kid.

Around the same time as this was growing I was working through the basic tutorials on strobist.com, so this gave me a perfect opportunity to practice with flashes, & gels. The green gel on the flash in the background is an attempt to really bring out the red of the fruit, working on the theory of complimentary colours learnt in art classes at night school – I didn’t try any other colours but I’m fairly confident they wouldn’t have been an improvement.

Composition-wise if I took this again I’d like to drop the far edge of the tile it’s sitting on just a touch, but other than that I’m happy with it, and I’m pretty pleased I’ve got a permanent reminder of a successful effort at being green fingered (especially as not everything I’ve grown has actually lived long enough to produce food…)
